A woman who came out to support Senate President Godswill Akpabio at a protest said she did not know the story and accusations against the Akwa Ibom senator.

Two groups of supporters, one on the side of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator representing Kogi Central, and the other for Akpabio, protested at the National Assembly on Wednesday.

While the Kogi lawmaker’s supporters were demanding the resignation of the Senate President and a probe into the sexual harassment claims against him, the pro-Akpabio protesters staged a counter-protest.

Some of the demands of the counter-protesters included an apology from Akpoti-Uduaghan to “the Senate, the Senate President and all Nigerian women”.

However, some women who joined the pro-Akpabio protest in Abuja seemed confused about the reason for their support for Akpabio.

A video clip posted on X by Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie, a lawyer and media personality, captured a woman admitting that though she did not understand the “whole story” about the Akpabio accusations she was supporting the senate president to prevent his sack.

She said that her “mind led” her to do so.

“I am supporting him because I did not see any wrong in what they are saying. Though I don’t know much about the details of what they are saying. I am just supporting him because my mind led me,” she said.

When asked if she supported Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, she said, “I don’t even really know what the whole story is about… Why I came out here today is because they said we should go out and support Akpabio, that he should remain as our Senate President.”

READ MORE: Akpoti Accuses Akpabio of Making Repeated Suggestive Remarks to Her

Akpoti-Uduaghan had a seating arrangement dispute with the Senate President in February. Her seat was relocated upon resumption of the session on that day, but she opposed the change, saying she was being denied her privilege.

During an interview on Arise TV a few days after the seating arrangement saga, the Kogi lawmaker accused the senate president of making suggestive remarks to her.

She disclosed that her problems in the Senate started after she turned down Akpabio’s sexual advances.

On Wednesday, she officially petitioned the Senate over the sexual harassment claims she made against Akpabio.

The Senate referred Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Code of Conduct for review.
