UPS Goes Mute on Vendor With Missing US-Bound Perfume Oil Bottles

A month after damaging a USA-bound package containing bottles of perfume oil sent by Tolulope Harry, an Ibadan-based perfume oil vendor, United Parcel Services (UPS) has kept mute on her compensation.

In September, FIJ reported that Harry sent a package containing 17 bottles of perfume oil to her customer in Maryland, USA, through UPS, but the courier firm had only delivered nine. The rest were damaged and stolen.

The perfume oil vendor was distraught by this and sought compensation from UPS for the damages, as that was not her first ugly encounter with the shipping and logustics business.

After FIJ’s report, UPS informed Harry they would investigate the case. Weeks have gone by since then and the UPS has neither provided an update to Harry on the outcome of the investigation nor compensated her for the damages.

She told FIJ that UPS asked her to produce a copy of an invoice she issued to her customer to ascertain the prices of the items, a copy of the waybill document and a receipt from UPS.

“They asked me for the invoice that reflects how much the bottles of perfume oil cost. I run a small business and do not have an invoice. I only have receipts of payments proving how much the item cost. They requested the UPS receipt that was issued to me. I gave them a carbon copy because that was all I could get from their office.

“They also asked for the waybill document, but I lost it while moving into a new place. They have it in their head office. A staff member told me they have it in there. I don’t know why they are disturbing me for it when it is in their head office,” Harry told FIJ on Monday night.

She informed them she could not provide an invoice because she is a small-business owner and also asked them to check their records for the other documents because they had them in their office.

“They asked for my account details and I am still waiting for my compensation. I ask about the status of the investigation every Monday, but they don’t respond. I started tagging them again on Twitter,” Harry added.

FIJ emailed UPS on Tuesday afternoon and they responded on Tuesday evening. Uduak, a customer service officer at UPS, asked for the tracking number.

FIJ’s correspondence with UPS since September 12.

On Thursday, FIJ sent the tracking number via email, but it has been over 24 hours and they have failed to respond.

Mary Olasupo, a Lagos-based nurse, has had a similar experience with UPS. In July, FIJ reported how she did not receive compensation from UPS after they delivered soaked documents from Nigeria to Florida in the USA
