Mercy Edward and Everest Edward paid N13.8 million to Elohor Moses Ibeh for three trucks of Dangote cement in 2024. He delivered just one. Then, he began to give excuses before he stopped responding to their inquiries altogether.

Edward told FIJ that her husband used to be a distributor of Dangote cement until the company increased the minimum number of trucks a distributor must buy.

Edward explained that when they used to distribute Dangote cement, they paid directly to the Dangote company account, but when the truck requirement increased and became unaffordable for the couple, they resorted to paying to Ibeh, who would get the cement from other distributors and have it delivered to them for sale.

A Screengrab of N13.8 million sent to Ibeh

“Mr Moses (Ibeh) is not a cement distributor or retailer. Rather, he is a Dangote sales or marketing representative covering the Asaba, Kwale and Ozoro areas. He is the one in charge of giving trucks of Dangote cement to distributors that are under his territory, that is, from Asaba, to Kwale and Ozoro axis,” Mercy Edward explained.

“But since we are no longer a Dangote distributor, since we could no longer buy up to 10 or 20 trucks of cement, my husband would send money to him for a truck or two trucks of cement because he could easily get it from any distributor for us. He has been delivering all this while, until this very one.

“When we were still Dangote distributor, we paid directly to Dangote account. After they confirm payment, they will send Mr Moses the number of cement you paid for, the code, the truck number and the driver’s number. He would be the one to make sure the cement gets to the distributor’s place, complete. He then reports back to the company. If we have any issue with the cement, he would be the one we would call or any of his colleagues. But he was the one we mostly called.”

The deals between the couple and Ibeh proceeded smoothly until the most recent one, FIJ learnt.

Apart from the crippling effect that the increase in distributors’ purchases had on the couple’s business, Everest Edward’s long-term ailment also made things difficult for them. None of this was disclosed to Ibeh.

At the rate of N4.6 million each, the couple paid N13.8 million to Ibeh in January 22, 2024, to deliver three trucks of Dangote cement. Ibeh delivered one truck that January, but he has continued to evade the couple ever since.

At first, Ibeh was responding to calls and texts, but all he continually did was give excuses for his failure to deliver the other trucks of cement. He once blamed his failure on a truck drivers’ riot. Later on, he shut the couple out totally.

“He is aware of all that we passed through due to the health issue. My husband was just recovering when we paid this money to him. Instead of helping matters, he made the situation worse. He doesn’t pick up his calls or respond to messages,” Edward told FIJ.

Edward said Ibeh had been reported to other Dangote cement representatives, but that was to no effect whatsoever. “We even reported it to EFCC, but still nothing happened,” she added.

Edward told FIJ that Ibeh has continued to evade the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) too.

“In December 2024, they (EFCC) called my husband that he should send Mr Moses’ (Ibeh) house address. Without the address, they cannot arrest him. Right from day one, we told them that we didn’t know where he lived, and that we have tried to get his house address, all to no avail. It was after then that we did tracking, but it showed he was in Abuja. When they tracked him again, it showed a different location,” Edward narrated.

FIJ called Ibeh in January, his phone line was unreachable. FIJ called him thrice on Tuesday, but he did not answer the phone. At press time, Ibeh was yet to respond to the text message FIJ sent to him.
