Nigeria has recorded not less than 51,887,032 household crime incidences in 2024, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) latest data revealed.

The NBS subdivided the crime statistics across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

The North West recorded the highest crime rate with 14 million cases followed by the North Central which stood at 8.8 million incidents. The South East had the lowest occurrence of household crimes with 6.1 million cases.

The report also stated that up to 15.3 million households have recorded at least one case of crime which represents 34.3 per cent of the total households in Nigeria. Out of these crimes, livestock theft was the most prevalent.

“Nationally, theft of livestock recorded the highest prevalence of 18 per cent, followed by theft of crop with 15.8 per cent, while the least was theft out of motor vehicle with 0.6 per cent,” the report read in part.

Furthermore, the report also showed a huge difference between crime rates in rural and urban areas.

While the crime rate in rural households stood at 40.1 per cent, urban households recorded 29.9 per cent in rural areas.

The report also featured the rate at which households in rural and urban areas reported crime cases to the police:

“Among households (with) at least one crime, the reporting rate to the police was 25.7 per cent. The result by zone provides additional insights into reporting rates, with North East at 30.4 per cent recording the highest; while the South-South (17.6%) had the lowest. By place of residence, households in rural areas (26.0%) reported more crime incidence than households in urban areas (25.3%).”
