The police have denied Olamide Abiodun Thomas, the human rights advocate arrested in Lagos State on Friday, bail.

FIJ learnt that she was denied bail at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, where she is being held under the insistence of the Inspector General of Police.

Sanyaolu Juwon, a leader of the human rights advocacy group called Take it Back (TIB) movement, confirmed the development to FIJ on Saturday.

Juwon disclosed that the police said they had instructions from Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), to detain her.

FIJ earlier reported that Abiodun, who has always been vocal in her criticism of the police and government, was arrested on Friday in the Shomolu area of the state.

“She was denied bail by the police yesterday (Friday). They said they have instructions from the IG to detain her, and that they were waiting on orders from above,” he said.

“We are at the police station again today (Saturday), awaiting further updates, which will determine our next point of action, which most likely will be a protest.

“This implies a possibility of occupying the police headquarters in Abuja, and state command in Lagos.”

When asked why she was arrested, he said, “It’s because of a video she made raining curses on the IGP, and Tinubu after she was brutalised during a protest on October 20.”

FIJ’s previous reports have detailed how the police first arrested and detained Lanre Shotunde, a businessman based in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in a bid to get to Thomas in November.

Shotunde was Thomas’ Facebook friend.

FIJ could not reach Ben Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos police, for comments both on Friday and Saturday, as he did not answer his calls and has not responded to the messages sent to him via SMS and WhatsApp.
