Eniola Odugbesan, a Lagos-based gadgets vendor, sent an iPhone 7 through Victor Ugochukwu Odionyema, an InDrive driver, from Ikeja to Akoka on November 4, but the recipient has yet to receive the phone.

Odugbesan told FIJ that this was because Victor Ugochukwu switched off his phone and cancelled the order shortly after collecting the item.

Victor Ugochukwu

The gadgets vendor suspected foul play when Ugochukwu cancelled the order without arriving at the fixed destination. As soon as this happened, Odugbesan tried calling him, but his line did not connect.

“When a rider picks up an item, he or she is not supposed to cancel the order until the package is delivered. But in this case, after collecting the item, he cancelled the order and switched off his phone. I have called him several times since that day, but his line has stopped connecting,” Odugbesan told FIJ.

Odugbesan added that he was frustrated by InDrive’s lack of action. According to him, the best the ride-share company did was to block Ugochukwu’s account.

“When I contacted InDrive, they told me to wait. The only thing they’ve done is block the rider’s account. They haven’t tried to contact his guarantor or next of kin. They keep telling me to wait for him to turn his phone back on,” he said.

InDrive’s response

FIJ called Victor Ugochukwu on Friday, but his phone was switched off. He also did not respond to a follow-up text message.

InDrive’s response

Also, FIJ emailed InDrive on Thursday for comments, but they have yet to respond as of press time.

Meanwhile, FIJ found that similar complaints about InDrive drivers abound on the internet. For example, on their latest Instagram post, FIJ found many customers complaining about InDrive drivers absconding with their items.
