‘I Now Trek to Work’ — Corps Members Using Zenith Bank Yet to Receive Allowance 7 Days After Payments

Some corps members who use Zenith Bank accounts have not received their September allowance, seven days after their fellows who use other banks received theirs.

EQ got wind of this on Sunday through a post on X, the microblogging app, by one of the affected corps members.

“The N33,000 allowance other corpers have received and spent, some corpers like me with Zenith Bank have not received ours and today is October 6. If this is not a tough time, I don’t know what else to call it,” @francisikuerowo, one of the affected corps members, posted.

33k NYSC allawee wey other corpers don receive, spend finish, some corpers like me with Zenith Bank never receive and today Na October 6. If this is not a tough time, I don’t know what else to call it.— Francis Ikuerowo (@francisikuerowo) October 6, 2024

On Tuesday, @francisikuerowo made another post stating that many corps members who use the bank to receive their allowance had started receiving theirs and urged them to check their bank app for confirmation.

I can confirm that Zenith Bank has paid all corps members now. Many corps members have started seeing credit alerts. Kindly check your bank app for confirmation.— Francis Ikuerowo (@francisikuerowo) October 7, 2024

Two days after the post was made, EQ confirmed that some corps members were yet to receive theirs.

Bolu Akinjide (not real name), a corps member who banks with Zenith Bank, told EQ that he and some other corps members had not received their allowance.

“I have two accounts with Zenith Bank. I had to tell my sister to send money to my friend’s account so that I could buy foodstuff. Thank God, where I live is not far from my place of primary assignment and that I do not depend on only the allowance,” Akinjide told EQ on Thursday.

“I now trek to work in the mornings, while my boss would drop me off in the afternoons. My boss has been buying me lunch since Monday. This is very unfair.”

He also told EQ that a WhatsApp group had been created for affected corps members who planned to storm Zenith bank branches on Monday if they did not receive their allowance before then.

POOR SERVICE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE WEEK

Other customers of Zenith Bank have been lamenting about the bank’s poor service. Videos of customers storming Zenith Bank branches have also appeared on social media platforms.

@ezeamanaoyeci1, an X user, posted that he transferred some money from his Zenith Bank into his OPay account to buy medicine, but he had not received a credit alert.

#Zenithbank please I did a transfer from my Zenith bank account to my OPay this morning to buy medicine because I’m not feeling fine after days of you guys not allowing me to to withdraw from my account and up till now the money has not yet appeared in my OPay please pay me— Ezeamanaoyechi1 (@ezeamanaoyechi1) October 10, 2024

“Please, I transferred from my Zenith Bank account to my Opay this morning to buy medicine because I am not feeling well days after you refused to allow me to withdraw from my accountant. Until now the money has not yet appeared in my OPay. Please help me,” the X user posted on Thursday.

EQ also saw posts similar to the X user’s post on the social media platform.

Zenith Bank and NYSC had not responded to EQ’s email from Monday at press time. EQ also sent a message to Ayotunde Adeniyi, Zenith Bank’s corporate communications manager, on Linkedin on Monday, but he failed to respond.

Many corps members have been experiencing a series of hardships due to Nigeria’s economic downturn. Some resorted to borrowing loans to survive and were excited when the Federal Government announced that the allowance had been increased to N70,000. Their joy waned in October when they received N33,000.
