Family and friends of Christianah Idowu have buried the slain 21-year-old 300 Level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).

They held a private ceremony at the Sabo Ikorodu Cemetary in Lagos on Thursday, two days after the police conducted an autopsy on her body.

Rita Ozobia, Idowu’s widowed foster mother, told FIJ via telephone on Wednesday evening that her body lay in the Yaba mortuary after the police concluded the autopsy.

“The police, at about 5:30 pm on Wednesday, permitted us to bury her,” Ozobia told FIJ.

“We put together a simple ceremony with an officiating minister. Her biological father cannot attend as it is traditionally improper for parents to see their children’s burial.”

INVESTIGATIONS ONGOING

Ayomide Adeleye, a 23-year-old Philosophy student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State, is the principal suspect in Idowu’s murder.

Adeleye confessed to killing her in his apartment on August 19 after she sought shelter with him during a heavy downpour while she was on her way to work.

The police arrested him on September 5 after he had spent two days in the custody of the 174 Batallion of the Nigerian army.

Since his arrest, several social media users have accused Adeleye of other murders.

Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, has refused to comment on the investigation into Adeleye’s involvement. He has rejected FIJ’s calls on several occasions since September 3.

However, the police exhumed her body on Monday and conducted an autopsy on Tuesday. The autopsy result had not been made public at press time.
