Five policemen from a police station opposite the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, in Enugu State, are facing human rights abuse and extortion accusations after they abducted and detained Emmanuel Eze, a 29-year-old medical radiographer.
Ebuka, Eze’s elder brother, narrated to FIJ on Monday that the police picked the radiographer from Emene Road on February 14 and accused him of being a yahoo boy, a term used to describe internet fraudsters.
He said the police drove him to the station, tortured him, and forced him to write a statement with doctored incriminating words to admit to the crime. At night, they took him to a PoS merchant to transfer N551,500 which they pocketed.

Recounting the experience, Ebuka said his brother was driving through that road on the day, but stopped to vulcanize his tyres.

While there, policemen drove past him and then returned to question him. They then picked him up.
“At the police station, they told him to write a statement saying he was a fraudster and a ritualist,” Ebuka told FIJ.
“He refused, and they started beating him with a 2×6 wood.
“One of the police officers went to call someone who they identified as the commissioner. The ‘commissioner’ told them to stop, and urged him to comply with them else he would be killed before morning. He wrote the statement, and they locked him in a cell.
“They refused him access to his phones and would not allow him to contact anyone. Later in the night, they met him and told him to transfer N500,000 to a PoS guy else they would continue from where they stopped since the ‘commissioner’ was no longer around.
“After the extortion, they returned his phones and drove him out of the station.”
He added that five policemen perpetrated the act, and one was Gideon, while the other was Chuks.
FIJ sent a message to the Enugu Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) on Tuesday, and they said Daniel Ndukwe, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) will intervene.
FIJ sent messages to Ndukwe. He had not responded at press time.
