Damilola Adeyera, a journalist resident in Enugu State, said he was in his house on Monday morning when he became inundated with calls from different loan apps advertising their packages to him.
Adeyera told FIJ on Monday afternoon, that Mercy, a loan agent from CashFarm, pressured him into taking low-interest lows with a flexible payment plan.
He said this was after he got calls and unsolicited WhatsApp messages from three previous agents who said they had taken his number from an online database.

Adeyera explained that while he was still going through the application after the loan agent sent it, to see what they offered, he suddenly realised that N5,700 had been disbursed into his bank account.
He said when he called the agent’s attention to the unauthorised disbursement, she simply blocked him and severed communication with him.
“I was in the house when I started getting calls from different loan agents advertising their packages to me,” Adeyera told FIJ.

“When the last one called me, I decided to engage her and know what was in it for me. She sent me the Android Packages of these apps. I checked and was going through them. She sent [the packages] for Hive Loan, Orange Loan, Speedy Cash and CashFarm.
“I was still going through the applications when I saw that N5,700 had been disbursed into my account.”
Adeyera said he was shocked to see the money had been deposited into his account as he was only surfing through the application. He said when he brought this to the loan agent’s attention, she blocked him and prevented him from reaching her.
He further explained that when he checked the application in an attempt to return CashFarm’s unsolicited loan immediately, he saw that he would be repaying N10,000.
“I instantly told the agent that I got N5,700 when I did not even request it. After I told her, she blocked me and I couldn’t reach her anymore,” Adeyera said.
“I’d told her when she first messaged me that I did not want embarrassment, but she kept insisting.
“When I checked the application and tried to repay, I saw that I would be refunding N10,000. That’s a ridiculous interest rate for a loan of that amount.
“If anyone could afford the entire N10,000 why would they take N5,700 to start with.”

FIJ called Mercy, the CashFarm agent who pressured Adeyera into taking the loan on Monday. While she didn’t deny baiting the journalist, she said he could return the loan if he wanted.
“I have guided him on how to make the refund, I didn’t disburse the loan to him. I am just a marketer,” Mercy said.
“He should check the application and figure out how to refund it. I have other customers to attend to; you’re disturbing me.”
